WHAT MAKES MY HEART SING?
Fun and stressless memories/experiences w/ my loved ones
Lately, the realization that the Father ,the son, and the Holy Spirit are able and gladly willing to do everything in me that I could never hope to do within myself.
Our dog, who we’ve had for a few years, was ill-treated in his former life. When we got him he was all tight and would huddle into a corner. Over time, quite a long time, he became chill and sprawled out; content. He doesn’t really know how to play, though, never safe enough to try I guess. But occasionally his enthusiasm, his heart singing, gets him tossing and playing with toys (not always his) and my heart sings brightly with him.
The morning sun waking me up, spending time with friends with whom I am comfortable, entire family get-together as we don’t live close to each other, riding a horse in the wilderness, a wagging tail, really noticing nature…
Playing with my air guitar collection. I have got 12 you know? #justsayin
Hugs. I’m not a hugger by any means, but getting/giving a good squeeze from the people I’m closest to is an instant refill! I love that the way I’ve hugged people has also changed with time: adjusting to my children as they grow, becoming more gentle with my mom as she ages, and even leaning into my husband to make room for his little tum. Makes my heart sing to have a physical token of affection from the people that mean the most to me 🙂
The diversity of human culture with its various values and faith traditions, some of which is responsible for the arising of civilization itself, makes my heart sing.
Community, being around great people. Basic necessities, being out in nature.
Seeing my granddaughters, each beautiful in such a different way. That’s one of the things
Watching a hummingbird, hearing a cardinal’s song, listening to my 3 year old grandson’s made up song about the color green, my disabled daughters belly laugh when she gets ticked by something, random acts of kindness…..
By singing to my heart’s content…
Being able to release my worries and letting go and of them.. gratitude and self compassion and mindfulness is the means
Every time I witness goodness prevailing.
Date night. My partner and I have been together for 14 years. We still look forward to leaving everything behind to spend quality time together. Try a new restaurant. Take a walk. Indulge on a dessert. It’s always fun.
Love it! I definitely could be better about finding time for date night 🙂
Wind in the trees, my grandchildren, being useful in someone else’s life, ripening raspberries for a hoped-for second harvest before the cold settles in.
Swimming in streams, dogs with zoomies, making my students smile
Watching movies where the person overcomes their struggles
Connecting with my husband and my kids over dinner
Laughing with my students and colleagues
Hiking and daydreaming
Walking over the boardwalk and seeing beautiful, clean, peeling waves. Watching the sun rise or set, particularly over a body of water. Waking up and finding my cat snuggled up to me. Finding the dog and cat laying together on the big dog bed. Seeing live music and being a part of that energy… my husband and I started our vacation last week with a concert and it was amazing! The rest of our trip was spent in the mountains, and I learned that hiking up 1000 or so feet really makes my heart sing. The glory experienced when you reach the peak of your hike is truly something else. And then making it back to the bottom and being grateful for the ability to have gone up and down… that also made my heart sing!
Feeling the warmth of my cats as I cuddle them makes my heart sing. Their lives are precious and our symbiotic relationship proves to me there is harmony in the world.
Letting go makes my heart sing.
Knowing, feeling God’s presence, especially in nature. Any newborn being. Birdsong in the morning, Sunrises and sunsets. And … a warm croissant and café au lait.
Being immersed in nature, singing with the choir or being accompanied by piano and singing solo. The loving embrace of my wife. Looking at my two boys and knowing that I have succeeded in my goal of raising two gentlemen who will make a contribution to this world in charity and love.
Standing at the rail on the ferry facing a warm breeze as Nantucket comes into view. A busy boathouse filled with rowers preparing to take to the water. Any dog park filled with the unbridled joy of dogs careening around one another. Unexpected letters in my mailbox. Songs of my youth as it is like listening to a soundtrack of a previous life. Coming home after a trip and finding as I open the door that it is finer than I remembered. A good croissant. Even better: a good raspberry croissant.
Such a wonderful list, Howie! Thank you 😊 🙏 🤩
Thank you for sharing. I, too, love songs from my youth and croissants.
Watching my grandchildren at play.
Seeing the good in people makes my heart sing.
Music! Lots of music, live, recorded, and from the lips of a child.
Right now, it’s SPRING! Mother Nature is strutting her stuff in such beauteous ways that it stirring my soul with divine connections. God’s handiwork in overdrive! Also, today I got out my first load of my possessions secretly out of my place into my new rental. YAY! I am signing, humming, and laughing.
