my feet. they have carried me, walked me, ran me sense forever, my whole body resting on them and will forever. when i feel like nothings there for me my feet have carried me through everything in my life, the good and bad. the playful times when i would run around on the playground with my childhood friends, the hard times i put on my feet with dance for going on 7 years.
My feet and ankles. since I’m a runner, I don’t think I’ve taken care of them properly. Since I sprained my ankle in April, it’s been tough to come back from it and now I’ve pulled a piriformis muscle. I have been learning to take my hearing and vision more seriously so that I don’t miss any new sound outside or miss seeing the beauty of the tress moving in the breeze catching the sunlight in the evenings.
My toes. Their movement can be so sophisticated with so many joints involved but how do I use them? What do they do? There’s wonderful enquiry in that.
As I am heavily ill since several days I must admit that I am especially aware now of the painful parts, especially ear, bronchus, pain in my forehead and my current lousy state of being. It makes it more than clear to be much more alert and caring than I usually am with my body, who works so well all these years without complaining often. The precious well working body deserves to be much more mindful for. Ant to be grateful for such a gift. Thank you all for your posts.

Like Craig, I often take for granted the parts I can’t see although there are still times when I marvel at what they are doing inside me, with no conscious direction. As someone with health issues, I am more conscious of certain parts and try to look after them but your questions reminds me that my body is a temple and should be treated accordingly. And, despite my problems, I am so much luckier than many, so I should give thanks more often for what my body can do and how well it does work.
The parts that don’t hurt and that I don’t see in the mirror 🙂
My heart. I was once asked by a massage therapist if i could feel anything. I didn’t know what to say because i am just so used to numbing myself out. I guess i do that to protect my heart unknowingly.
When I was young I was a dancer/yoga instructor. I majored in dance education in college and became a dance teacher in secondary school. Since retirement in 2012 i haven’t been working out much or dancing and have put on some weight so I’d have to say my whole body is in need of attention. I have a magnet on my refrigerator that says, “It’s never too late to create a new body”. I need to listen to that advice even at 65. After becoming an acupuncturist 11 years ago I know better and need to put into practice what I know on many levels and take nothing for granted.
My knees! I fell while hiking a few months ago and broke my femur. I healed rapidly, but I am noticing now that my gait is different and it is putting stress on my knees. I sure don’t want to fall again, so I will get a professional opinion on this.
Oh, dear, Linda – I have all manner of knee supports from pharmacies and such. There’s a really good one now, though it’s not particularly inexpensive. I think the knee supports are getting better and better
What is the name of the good knee support you like?
I actually like any cheap knee support, too – just the bit of warmth helps, I think. I put on my fancy one this morn, but my knee was sore at a spot that wasn’t helped, so now I’m wearing a simple old dollar-store knee ‘sleeve’. Warm wishes!

It always amazes me when one part is hurt or unwell how it ripple effects other parts of the body. Headaches lead to nausea. Sciatica down the leg. A broken toe misaligns the hips. Stress effects all the body systems. Take nothing for granted and listen to your body.
A month of back pain has brought me much appreciation for my overall health & remembering that parts of the body affect other parts of the body. It’s all interconnected. Our body is so intelligent. I give thanks every day for my health & accept my current physical “brokenness” as a part of life. I am also seeking medical care to remedy the situation.
I guess pretty much the whole package, I am sorry to say. I, of course have my conscious moments of thanking my feet, my legs, my lungs, my heart as I take my daily walks. But for the most part I take my body for granted. I do however try to take very good care of her. Lately I am very aware of my left shoulder, it is having issues, so now I am seeing a chiropractor. Great question for me to ponder as I go about my Sunday. 🙂

Perfect timing of this question as I completed a 5K yesterday (St. Pete Pride 5K). Feet are sore today. I take probably all of my body for granted – I’m grateful I can see, grateful for my glasses, the rest of my senses – sound, smell, and taste. My organs, tissues – skin, need to remember to wear sunscreen and protect it. This is a great reminder to take care of all your body.

So glad you brought up skin / sunscreen ….
I recently became a poster child for using sunscreen after having a skin cancer lesion which was very close to my eye removed .
This involved sutures & a huge black eye that was swollen shut for a number of days . I am healing well but I will -never – again take for granted my skin and will slather on sunscreen ( ears included ! ) every time I am exposed to the sun .

These days I take none of my body parts for granted. Probably because my body has experienced major changes and limitations in the last two years. However, I certainly did take my body for granted and misuse and abuse it in many ways for many years. Today, I’m extremely aware of how resilient it has been in spite of my misuse and I give thanks.
