I was shown kindness at a very difficult moment in my life. It changed me. Being kind to others has been my priority ever since. Being kind can require bravery, as it can invite judgment, abuse, ridicule, and rejection. Being the first to smile or say good morning to someone is an act of bravery.

I think I notice it at church, work, gym, anywhere really. When I pay attention, I see people stopping to let you out in traffic, or people pointing out when you’ve dropped something, or people smiling and complimenting you. Kindness is just as common as any other trait, you just have to look for it and focus on it, instead of something negative.

Any time I cared to look. It is always there.

I see this all the time in the simplest of forms ….a smile.😀 My favorite memory of this is when I was a server. One gentleman paid it forward and the table he paid for, paid it forward. This happened 7 or 8 times in a row. No one told them they had to continue it but they were moved to and it was an amazing story and a day I will remember forever.

A few years ago, in the advanced choir at the university I went to, we had a student whose mother died, a student whose friend died, and the professor whose dad died-all in the same semester. While these losses were sad, the amazing compassion everyone showed spread like wildfire, and we grew closer to each other because of these losses.

I notice this many days, when / as I am awake and open to see this. When I am struggling to face a moment or day, it is often kindness that pulls me out into relationship and the world. When I step out of my home to walk, it is generally within five minutes or less that I am aware of how contagious kindness is. And yes, similarly, when I or another person are attending to the other wolf, a different energy is felt and shared…

Kindness is contagious when people allow themselves to accept and feel it deeply. The comfort it can bring makes us want to spread it.

Fortunately I can notice it every day. Either the other one is the first of us both, or it is me who shows kindness first. Why not. It is not expensive

I notice that kindness is contagious through simple acts such as a smile or compliment. When someone compliments me, it puts me in a better mood and I then decide to compliment someone. I think being a kind human can make all the difference and spread positivity.

This past winter, thousands upon thousands all across Canada came out to support truckers because they cared and wanted to help.

I’d say there hardly has been a day of my life in which I have not seen this as a reality. Some days more than others. Some days I am the pourer or perfume, other days the receiver, and on many a bit of both. If I do not see it firsthand, I read about it, watch it in movies. I see the opposite too of when hatred is contagious. Yet I believe that love and kindness overcome always. More than ideals, reality as a personal experience.

hmm- kindness as a contagion– the question in my mind, after reflection on experiences, have I become kinder after some kindness was extended to me and/or when I have witnessed kindness? And to mind came– is kindness an extension of generosity. And- when kindness is given or received is there a sense of belonging and being visible and wishing of happiness? What is the physiological sensation of kindness? Will being mindful that I always have gratitude within me enable me to notice opportunities to be kinder to myself and other?

I went grocery shopping Sunday to a particular store that requires a 25 cent deposit on the grocery cart. I watched a handful of us pass our empty carts on to others never taking the next deposit.. it touched me.

      It is possible,
      dear Carla,
that I shop at the same grocery store chain as you…
I have also noticed in that store,
that people in the check out line
very often let others with just a few things
      go ahead of them.

It depends on the people and what they are focused on. I have noticed that during the pandemic, people who had trouble dealing with life when it wasn’t what they wanted became aggressive and very mean spirited. And on the other side I saw people go beyond what they would ordinarily do for someone else and extend themselves for others in tremendous acts of kindness. Using another popular saying, it depends on which wolf you are feeding…..
