Day 82: Awaken Your Inner Mystic
Reflect
If you’ve ever looked up at the night sky and wondered at the scale of the cosmos, if you’ve longed to discover meaning in something larger than yourself — that’s the mystic in you coming through. Br. David Steindl-Rast upends any notions of a mystic being some lone individual on a mountaintop: “The mystic is not a special human being,” he says. Rather, “every human being is a special kind of mystic.” The Oxford Dictionary defines a mystic as someone seeking to understand important things that are beyond the intellect. And while many contemporary cultures prioritize what we can grasp intellectually, Br. David’s words invite us to welcome mystery, ponder the ineffable, and receive the gift of what we cannot fully comprehend.
Practice
Welcome your inner mystic today. Bring to mind something you’ve experienced in life that is beyond words — a sense of the holy, your love for someone, the aliveness you felt that one time dancing or hiking or just sitting in the sun. As you savor this gift beyond words, set an intention to nurture your inner mystic today through quiet, nature, music, remembering, pausing to look up at the sky. What does it feel like to welcome the unknown, those things beyond words?
