Day 4: Be Dazzled by the Moon & Stars, the Trees & Flowers
Reflect
Imagine if the moon were visible only one night in your entire life or if flowers bloomed only once a decade. How would you organize your life to experience such awe? Isn’t it extraordinary that every day of every year, the sun rises, the stars dazzle, the trees shade, the rivers nourish? Such beauty and mystery! Based on his awe research across cultures and age groups, Dacher Keltner reports: “It is hard to imagine a single thing you can do that is better for your body and mind than finding awe outdoors. Doing so leads to the reduced likelihood of cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, diabetes, depression, anxiety, and cancer.” Every day, amidst individual and global struggles, we have the chance to be both dazzled and nourished by the world around us.
Practice
For 5 minutes today, seek awe in the natural world. Whether you’re able to get outside, look through a window, or simply close your eyes and envision your favorite place in nature, document three gifts of the natural world that inspire your awe. Make a simple list, take pictures, record sounds, sketch, call forth memories — whatever heightens your appreciation. What changes when you take time to enjoy and savor these gifts?
