Day 10: Be Passionate about Your Life

Reflect

Many people go through their days asleep to the joys, opportunities, and delights contained within this one life they have been given. Monotony, heartache, loss, and hardship can make any day difficult. But so often, people allow doomscrolling on social media, the news, or complacency to distract them from actually living. Even more dangerous, many of us act like our time here is infinite. The neurosurgeon Paul Kalanithi, who was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer at the age of 36, wrote, “Even if I’m dying, until I actually die, I’m still living.” When we are passionate about being alive, we approach our days and relationships with greater zeal, conviction, and hope. This is a day that has been given to you.

Practice

Today’s practice may make you uncomfortable, but it is an illuminating way to passionately approach today. Throughout your day, look at every person you encounter, object you enjoy, and experience you are having as if it were a last. In your heart, say goodbye to these things. Allow yourself to feel what arises. When your day concludes, reflect on what you cherish, what you will miss, and how you can be more alive to these things tomorrow.
