100-Day Gratitude Challenge
Day 42: Let the Moral Beauty of Others Inspire You
Reflect
Dacher Keltner’s global research on awe shows that the greatest source of awe across cultures is the courage, kindness, and overcoming hardship that we witness in our fellow human beings — what he calls moral beauty. Sources of moral beauty can range from a story of heroism on the evening news to kindness from a stranger to the lifelong work of passionate global leaders. What these examples have in common is human beings acting with great courage, even in the face of enormous challenges. And when we witness and remember these exemplars, we ourselves are in awe — changed, inspired, and motivated to rise up and make our own contribution to a better world.
Practice
Bring to mind someone who has been an example of moral beauty for you. This could be a family member, a friend, someone famous either past or present. What are this person’s qualities or actions that inspire awe in you? Pick one of those attributes to try on today and embody. What is it like going through your day with a focus on expressing this quality?
