Day 85: Open Your Senses; Your Heart Will Follow

Reflect

Imagine for a moment a choir in South Africa, kids in Los Angeles, and a sitar player in India — all performing the same piece of music from their home countries. And now imagine that this music is recorded and spliced together in a seamless video of powerful singing and playing from people from wildly different cultures and traditions. This is the work of Playing for Change, a global project that connects people through the power of music. In their work, the music is a portal to the transcendent in that it rises above differences and political conflict, allowing us to feel, as Nick Cave describes, “spiritually connected…even leading us to a place where a fundamental spiritual shift of consciousness can happen.” This is the mystery and gift of music, and we’re invited to receive and savor these awe-inspiring gifts of life that connect us to one another and to something beyond ourselves.

Practice

Seek out a source of awe today that helps you feel fully alive. Choose something that helps you transcend the everyday — music, art, getting outside. Use all of your available senses to ground you in the present moment, while also opening the door to the beauty of what you can’t fully explain or understand. Open your senses; your heart will follow.
