Day 84: Consider Spirituality as a Vital Awareness

Reflect

Br. David Steindl-Rast writes, “Sometimes people get the mistaken notion that spirituality is a separate department of life, the penthouse of existence. But rightly understood, it is a vital awareness that pervades all realms of our being.” It is, he reminds us, a kind of “aliveness in all areas of body and mind — from healthy living habits to respectful ways of treating others, to caring for our environment, and relating to Mystery.” It’s not something touchy-feely but a heightened awareness that helps us see beyond the mundane to the meaningful, beyond the superficial to the profound.

Practice

Try out Br. David’s definition of spiritual as “vital awareness…aliveness in all areas of body and mind.” For 3 minutes, try to heighten your awareness of self and surroundings. Start by taking a few slow breaths, then ask yourself: What do my senses perceive? What does my heart need today? How do I want to show up to my life? At the end of the 3 minutes, notice anything that this brief practice of vital awareness opened or made apparent.
