100-Day Gratitude Challenge
Day 73: Welcome What You Cannot Yet Imagine
Reflect
Life often disrupts our flow like a dam in a river basin. We think we are heading in one direction and then suddenly we face a blockage. Depending on how they unfold, these detours, changes, and disruptions in life can range from frustrating to devastating. When we lose something or someone who matters to us, it can feel impossible to see beyond our next breath. It takes care, attention, and tenderness before we can begin to imagine anything capable of existing alongside our heartache. While a dammed river does not know all that it will fuel — the local inhabitants that are being kept safe by the presence of the dam or the sustenance it provides to nearby crops — there is something awaiting the river even if it is not easily known. Life is constantly waiting in the wings for us even when, especially when, we are navigating change.
Practice
Take the opportunity today to look for reminders of a time when you faced an unplanned or unimaginable change in your life. This change may have been relational, professional, or situational, and the reminders might include mementos, music, photographs, or a place. As you gather reminders of this time in your life, in what ways do you recognize the past existing alongside today? How does recognizing the continuation of the story make you open to any uncertainty that is ahead?
