My husband and I often make each other laugh with some kind of wordplay. We make up goofy song lyrics or puns, make up nicknames for the cat (so many that I make lists of them), make up some new brand name for a product, rhyme with each other’s sentences. Today we went on a walk and had some laughs with this kind of banter. I love words and it makes me happy that we make each other laugh this way.
As a generally melancholy-prone person,
humor
doesn’t often find a natural home in me.
I remember,
when I was a very little girl
noticing
that my mother laughed differently
in polite society
than she did
when something struck her funny,
and I asked her about it one day . . .
she seemed confused
and embarrassed,
and even though I was quite small,
I knew the question
made her too uncomfortable to answer.
But I sensed that the ‘polite society’ laughter
was contrived
and not real.
Now that I am a grown up
I realize
that I do the same thing,
and laugh in public
to fit in . . .
it’s like a mask,
because I do not naturally laugh
very much at all.
Genuine laughter
only really comes
when I feel comfortable and relaxed,
when something is really funny,
and I know that I need more of it
in my life.
I have an old, coffee stained cartoon
from an old psychology textbook
stuck on my refrigerator . . .
it is a Far Side cartoon–
a drawing of a trail of geese crossing the street.
Following behind
is a man in an overcoat . . .
the caption reads,
“imprinting gone awry.”
The cartoon
is especially funny to me
because as an animal lover
I have been told
that I am more
cat or owl,
deer,
crow or rabbit
than I am human . . .
like I’ve imprinted on animals
instead of humans.
What can I say?
Books and films
that are comedies
just don’t generally attract me,
but odd little things
do tickle me,
so there is lightness there,
somewhere inside of me.
I just need to find a way to draw it out.
Any ideas? ♥
I vote for more cartoons and comics, Sparrow. The Far Side was great and the internet is full of comic repositories. Calvin and Hobbes was another sure source of lightness for me.
I’ve been reading a book of supposedly comedic essays and finding that I don’t shut off my critical faculties if I see some darker side to a story. What would give someone a laugh if they stay in the shallows doesn’t work for me. Kids’ books might be another venue. My daughters used to laugh at the Captain Underpants series.
Yes Sparrow, I think I know that thing that you’re talking about. That polite Laughter. Strangely, laughter might be a kind of complicated response, full of social cues and references. Some people laugh when they’re nervous or even when someone gets hurt.
I love the Far Side! 😁
I’m getting a much needed haircut today so that definitely invites lightness into my day and I was blessed with a lot of laughter yesterday as I visited with two friends and we told stories about our kids when they were little ones. Lots of good memories which have me smiling already today!
I like to laugh, kid around, be sarcastic, and have a little fun. It can be a cover though. “Sometimes you have to laugh, to keep from crying”.
I guess it’s a balance though. It’s only light that balances out the darkness.
I’m currently watching my cat play with a couple of little balls. She’s having a blast. Definitely bringing lightness and laughter to my morning.
I too,
dear Charlie,
have to consciously seek out lightness
so the darkness
doesn’t swallow me up . . .
it’s getting easier though,
thanks to many things,
including my cats. ♥
I’ve got some drudgery scheduled today, healthy tasks about which I’m dragging my feet. Like going to the gym. I could imagine the most ridiculous form of the unappealing tasks. Like what if I went to the gym and the only thing I had to do for 45 minutes was try to lift a 100 lb. kettlebell and fail, again and again? What if I ended up in traffic and physically had to climb over a broken-down garbage truck to get to my destination? Or take a rabbit to the dog park? Sorta like negative visualization, but ad absurdium.
Drea, I’ve been talking to a fly this morning as I prefer not to kill it. Asking it, “Wouldn’t you rather be outside. If you would move closer to a door, I will gladly open it and let you fly away!
My dog makes me laugh every day. Even when I don’t want to. She’s just so cute and does the most outlandish things. Even the things she’s done before surprise me and I surprise myself with laughter over it. I’m so glad we got her. We debated if we were too old for a puppy, but she has been the light in our ever slowing lives.
Getting a late start today. Sleeping in is not the norm–but, I needed it to feel lighter today. I woke up feeling heavy, in Yoga we call it tamasic. A little coffee and kittens and my heart is lightened. Being here, with all of your light, is further lightening. Now, I am looking out the window, to blue skies and waiting out the worst of traffic. I think there is a lesson in that– just look out the window and let the hope stream in.
I will find a site that has babies 👶 laughing. I used to have this mechanical laughing dog. I no longer have it. It had a contagious laugh and roll over. Just thinking about it brings lightness.
A friend had a post-it note on her refrigerator that read, « Take your lightness deeply and your deepness lightly. » It’s a good reminder to not take myself too seriously. When I can get there, peace and freedom awaits. 🌸
for those of you who love fart humor you must check out HumorBagel on youtube – this guy records ppls reactions when he makes fart noises (has a device in his pocket) in NYC – the ones under the bridge are so funny bc they are loud and echo. My stomach hurts sooo much from hard laughing watching his videos – love him.

Bless you,

I think just by finding the joy in my to do list today, being grateful I can even work on my goals.

Earol, I’m about to get mine within the next few days.
Oh, haircuts do feel nice. I love the head massage part.
I remember
always feeling lighter after a haircut,
dear Carol Ann . . .
nowadays
my husband
just trims off the split ends
every six months or so.
I smiled
reading about the time you had with friends
yesterday. 🙂

By not taking things so seriously. There are very few things in life that require genuine seriousness.

Absudrium,
dear Drea,
can be a good thing. 🙂
It really can, Sparrow!
🙂
Drea, I’ve been talking to a fly this morning as I prefer not to kill it. Asking it, “Wouldn’t you rather be outside. If you would move closer to a door, I will gladly open it and let you fly away!
Carol, did it listen??
Drea, This fly did not listen but I have had them listen in the past. I still did not swat him down but haven’t seen him for a couple of hours.
Same thing with spiders,
dear Carol Ann . . .
a glass
with a piece of cardboard slid under
works well for me. 🙂

Same here, our dogs are funny every day.

My chaorder lifestyle already defines that.
Hahaha!
I’m in a challenging time, but my husband thinks life is all about opportunites to make bad jokes, so he perseveres, and sometimes extracts a chuckle.
A friend had a post-it note on her refrigerator that read, « Take your lightness deeply and your deepness lightly. » It’s a good reminder to not take myself too seriously. When I can get there, peace and freedom awaits. 🌸
That’s a fabulous quote!
The post-it note
really helps,
dear M2
to put things into perspective . . .
I like this. ♥
M2 love the note ! So helpful to lighten up!
laughter is so important and feels good. People have different senses of humor – find something funny on youtube – cats, dogs, babies, farts
https://nationaltoday.com/today/

Beans, beans, the magical fruit. The more you eat, the more you toot. The more you toot, the better you feel. So, eat your beans at every meal!
I’ll take dots today,
dear Michele . . .
I make thousands of them
in my drawings. 🙂
I love farts too! My hubby shared one in the grocery store. He was like a mischevous five-year-old. No one was close by! He tooted and ran!
Michele, laughter is the best medicine, and I love farts.
