Day 47: Be Neighborly

Reflect

In 2025, the Pew Research Center found that only about 26% of U.S. adults know all or most of their neighbors. 12% don’t know any. An Egyptian proverb offers a wise warning for this data: “You can do without friends, but not without neighbors.” Over the past 50 years, the social fabric of America has changed. Connection, helping, looking out for others, being helped, and sharing a cup of sugar are dissipating. No wonder we’re fractured! Social scientist Kristen Barta says, “When you intentionally practice being a good neighbor, you’re exercising a muscle for social connection and trust.” When we connect with acquaintances, we experience feelings of belonging. Small, everyday gestures between neighbors can provide benefits to the entire community, including a decrease in health problems among its members. We’re social creatures not meant to be fractured and disconnected. Connecting locally is a powerful remedy for these times.

Practice

Be neighborly today by making yourself visible and being present in your community. Be seen. Share food, check-in on a neighbor, make small talk. How does feeling connected to a neighbor empower you to be more helpful to them in the future?
