100-Day Gratitude Challenge
Day 33: Be Tender and Befriend Yourself
Reflect
During the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, the legendary Olympian Simone Biles dropped out at the peak of her career. Her mental health required her to take a pause. Despite the pressures of the moment and cruel critics, she listened to her needs. Whether at the top of a career or following loss and grief, we experience difficult and unfair seasons in our life. The opportunity always before us is to listen and be tender with ourselves. The jazz musician Gregory Porter sings these lyrics to himself in the song It’s Probably Me: “When the world’s gone crazy, and it makes no sense, and there’s only one voice that comes to your defense, ask yourself…My only friend, who could it be?’ It’s hard to say it. I hate to say it. But it’s probably me.” Your struggles require your unique attentiveness to you.
Practice
Identify a challenge or adversity that you are facing but not giving your full attention right now. Set aside ten minutes today to sit with it and be present to it. What is one thing you need right now and how can you act on it? Having given it attention, how do you experience a greater sense of connection to yourself?
