Day 39: Create a Micro Ritual
Reflect
It’s easy to think of rituals as primarily for the big occasions of life — milestone birthdays, graduations, weddings, births and deaths, religious ceremonies. And while rituals for these threshold events help us commemorate, build community, or honor what we deem holy, it’s no less powerful to create small rituals in everyday life. Small rituals can remind us of our true north, guide us through change, and bring our attention to the present moment. They can offer respite, security, connection, and an amplification of the sacred. Michael Norton, author of The Ritual Effect, writes, “The rituals in our lives, both established traditions and those we craft ourselves, serve as anchors, grounding us and imbuing our actions with meaning.”
Practice
Pick one aspect of your day, something you already do — drinking tea, walking, arriving at work or back home, caretaking — that would be enriched by a simple ritual. Where would you like more spaciousness, joy, connection, or reverence? Common ritual elements include a focus on the breath, music, a reading, a treasured object like a stone, and special light like a candle. Choose an element or two to create, or add to, a simple, nourishing ritual for your daily life.
