Day 6: Let Go of Fear

Reflect

Fear-based perspectives are everywhere — on the news, in politics, all over social media, and likely in your daily interactions or even from within. Despite having had 300,000 years to evolve to a higher consciousness, we still have what is commonly known as reptilian brains, which often get in our way. This term refers to the basal ganglia, which is where we experience fear and self-defense. The reptilian brain may still serve us when we experience physical dangers, but fear-based decision making is a limiting and potentially dangerous perspective in modern life. The opposite of fear is trust. In order to thrive as a network of collaborative communities across the globe, trust needs to be cultivated and maintained. It is part of our social contract with each other. When we respond fearfully to life or each other, we fracture the core element of what holds us together. We trade the opportunities in front of us for a narrow and primitive perspective.

Practice

Keep track of every fear-based idea or perspective you encounter today, even those that come from within. At least once, offer an alternative and more trusting perspective. At the end of your day, reflect on how frequently you heard fearful perspectives and what it felt like to offer up a different way of looking at things. Make note of any ways that fear gets in the way of opportunities for connection and understanding.
