Day 24: Listen to Your Inner Wisdom

Reflect

It can be hard to trust one’s inner wisdom amidst the distraction and noise of the world. Whether your life is so busy that it feels impossible to find a few moments of stillness or you’re continually taking input from television and social media, it’s pretty easy to forget that deep within, you know some things that are worthy of your attention. The theologian and civil rights leader Howard Thurman writes, “In the stillness of the quiet, if we listen, we can hear the whisper in the heart giving strength to weakness, courage to fear, hope to despair.” The key is “the stillness of the quiet” in which we give our inner wisdom a chance to be heard and a chance to expand.

Practice

Find 5 minutes today when you can grab a bit of stillness for yourself (set an alarm if that helps) and ask yourself the following question: What wisdom is my heart offering to me today? Ask the question and then, for a full 5 minutes, pay attention to what arises. At the end of the 5 minutes, write down anything that emerged that you don’t want to forget, and take note of what was easy or hard about listening for your inner wisdom.
