Day 31: Loiter a Little Longer

Reflect

There are 1,440 minutes in a day, but many of us behave like there are 3,000. We busy ourselves with tasks, we exhaust ourselves with social media and news, and we tune into things that matter less than the attention we give them. Not too long ago many convenience stores, places of business, and some public spaces frequently had “no loitering” signs around their perimeters. These signs told us to move on, do your business and go, there’s nothing to see here. That is how many of us behave in much of what we do — we move onto the next task or thought. But what do we encounter in a place when we loiter, when we hang around a bit longer than is necessary? Are there joys, opportunities, mini-dramas, and revelations unfolding around you all day? The only way to know is to stick around for a bit.

Practice

Don’t rush through your day. Instead, hang out a little longer in a place where you might usually hurry on. Observe this place and all that is unfolding in it. What did you see when you stopped and observed rather than hurried? Did you recognize anything new or different to make you appreciate this place more?
