Day 87: Do More Than Visit This World

Reflect

None of us wants to arrive at the end of a year or a decade or a life, wondering if somehow we’ve not fully lived or not fully been ourselves. This of course doesn’t mean a life without disappointment and grief, but it does describe a life in which we have the presence, confidence, and courage to offer our unique response to the world. In her poem “When Death Comes,” Mary Oliver writes, “When it’s over, I don’t want to wonder if I have made of my life something particular, and real. I don’t want to find myself sighing and frightened, or full of argument. I don’t want to end up simply having visited this world.”

Practice

Do one thing today that makes of your life “something particular, and real” — something you could write on a calendar and later be able to say, oh yes, that was the day I…had a long talk with my friend, read a book I loved, gave someone a gift, forgave someone. Choose one thing that’s a meaningful expression of your aliveness, and do that. Take note of how it feels to add your unique expression or contribution to the day.
