Day 56: Stand Up for Something through Play & Joy
Reflect
In 1980s Poland, The Orange Alternative responded to authoritarian crackdowns on public gatherings by organizing surreal protests featuring gnomes. Their slogan? “We don’t need guns to fight a war — sometimes a gnome is enough.” Demonstrating a powerful mix of play and joy, their response to an oppressive government garnered a huge following and contributed to eventual regime change. Offering one of the most beautiful definitions of play, the theologian Martin Buber wrote, “Play is the exultation of the possible.” When we are playful, whether in action or in spirit, it is a kind of rejoicing in life, a way of giving thanks for — and sometimes protecting and defending — what matters most to us.
Practice
Take a few minutes to think of one playful, joyful way you can stand up for something you care about. If you’re politically active, add a dose of humor to your actions: Make your next rally sign a clever one or grab a representative’s attention with a humorous postcard. If you’re trying to bring about a change in your home or workplace, find a way to weave play and joy into your efforts: Host a laundry-folding party, complete with music, to announce that you’re no longer doing that chore, or organize a silly game to break the ice with colleagues where there’s tension. Be courageous!
