Day 53: Tap the Power of Forgotten Joy

Reflect

In the midst of difficulty, it’s normal to focus on how to change things and get to a place of greater well-being and peace. Envisioning the future we’re seeking is essential. Sometimes, though, the balm, wisdom, or courage we need to move forward can be found only in looking back. Theologian and civil rights leader Howard Thurman writes, “Whatever may be the tensions and the stresses of a particular day, there is always lurking close at hand the trailing beauty of forgotten joy or unremembered peace.” Slowing down enough to call forth memories of joy and peace can remind us of the good. It doesn’t solve everything, but it can be a reminder of what’s possible. And it might even offer a bit of healing when we need it most.

Practice

Take a few minutes today to look back at your life and bring to mind a specific memory of joy. Close your eyes, and allow yourself to recall the texture and feel of this particular memory, whether it’s a specific moment or a stage of your life. Let yourself hang out with this memory for a few minutes. When you’re ready, consider the following: What solace, guidance, or possibility does this memory offer you today? How does it help clarify the joy and peace you want to work toward in your current life?
