The monk in us is not some hooded little somebody who is sitting in there, but is our true self. …For heaven’s sake, don’t allow the monks to steal the contemplative life from you.

Br. David Steindl-Rast

You may not live in a monastery, but you can create one for yourself…even in your messy, beautiful, everyday life.

For centuries, monastics like Br. David Steindl-Rast, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Joan Chittister have demonstrated how sacred spaces, contemplation, community, and guiding principles create the conditions for a meaningful life. It’s tempting to think that this way of being is reserved for monks in a monastery and remains completely out of reach in our modern, fast-paced world. But the monastery and the monk within are closer than you think.

By weaving together monastic rhythms and traditions with the daily practice of living gratefully, you can discover a framework for a more intentional path through life.

Pathway Overview

Delivered as a 5-day series of emails, our Pathways provide guidance, inspiration, and practices to help you cultivate a more grateful life. Each day includes an introduction, inspiring resources, daily practice, reflection prompts, and supporting research.

You may not live in a monastery, but you can create one for yourself. Whether it’s a garden, special spot in your home, religious space, or somewhere you travel in your mind, a designated space that allows you to listen with and to your heart is essential for discovering your monk within.

Across traditions, monastic life is supported not just by carefully designed spaces but by the intentional structure of time. To sanctify time in daily life is to create space for a balance of contemplation and study, community and celebration, work and play. It’s a way of honoring and giving thanks for the gift of time that you’ve been given.

Although it’s common to think of monks as living solitary lives of silent prayer and study, monk life is intensely communal — dependent on shared responsibility and care. Discovering your inner monk is not about turning away from others; it’s about turning more fully toward them by thinking in the village way.

While you can’t just add “have a mystical experience” to your calendar like something to check off the list, discovering your inner monk includes creating the conditions in which the heart can be inexplicably moved and the soul unaccountably awakened.

Across traditions, monastic life is guided and sustained by clear principles and practices, from Buddhist Vinaya and precepts to the Christian Rule of St. Benedict. As you discover and nourish your inner monk, creating or recommitting to your own rule for life can be a liberating exercise that illuminates the path toward the life you want to live.
