Setting goals and aiming high are often the result of our efforts to get a little closer to perfection.

There’s joy in our aspirations for improving ourselves and the world around us. But what if they also keep us from fully experiencing the richness of life that is available to us right now?

The world is imperfect, and most of the time so are we.

While imperfection is often associated with flaws, it is the very human experience that binds us to one another. It’s a doorway to creativity, opportunity, and meaning. And the benefits of befriending imperfection are great: contentment, greater well-being, and peace.

Pathway Overview

Delivered as a 5-day series of emails, our Pathways provide guidance, inspiration, and practices to help you cultivate a more grateful life. They are self-paced and yours to keep. Each day includes an introduction, inspiring resources, daily practice, reflection prompts, and supporting research.

Imperfection is often a source of joy and beauty — and likely the source of your deepest laughter! The imperfections of life remind you that you’re part of a vibrant and ever-changing world, telling the story of your surprising and unique life: “Remember the time…!” When you pause to notice the imperfections that actually enrich your life, you may find yourself giving thanks for things you’d forgotten.

Making peace with your own imperfections opens the door to being fully alive. When you hold yourself to an unattainable standard, you not only experience greater stress and anxiety, but you miss out on some of life’s joys and opportunities. With practice, you can liberate yourself from unrealistic, unhealthy expectations and find greater aliveness in your daily life.

When you cling too tightly to a vision of how things should be, you miss the opportunities in life as it is. Living as if you’re going to arrive at a future state of perfection or continually being dissatisfied with life’s messiness makes it nearly impossible to be present to the opportunities for meaning and connection that are available right now.

Creativity is an open and courageous way of being in the world, and creative expression is available to everyone in some form. When the goal of creativity is not perfection but playful exploration, enjoyment, and beauty, you can more easily tap the courage to try something new. Unleashing your creativity is a way of gratefully saying yes to life.

Recognizing others’ imperfections can enhance our sense of connection and shared humanity. Couple this with releasing the need to be perfect in all things, and you’re well situated to act on behalf of others and the greater good. Embracing imperfection allows you to answer the question, “What can I possibly do?” with a meaningful action that is rooted in compassion but does not have to solve everything.
