All that we choose is given to us by life. And all that we refuse is also given to us. But you can choose to go against the grain all your life or you can choose to go with the grain, and it’s a lot easier to go with the grain. But in the end, there is no difference. That is a really profound insight which we can check out in the little details of life. Whatever we refuse is also given to us in the end.

Life is so great that everything is given to us. But love is that lived yes over against that possible no. Just as faith was the yes to life, hope was the yes to living. So love is the lived yes. In other words we become yes when we love, we become yes. We become yes to life. And that then opens us to the gift of all gifts, the surprise of our surprises, and that is we belong. And that is what we long for. We long for belonging.
