Staff
Joe Primo

Chief Executive Officer

Joe is a passionate trainer, community-builder, and program developer. His accomplishments in the field of grief made him a leading voice on resilience and adversity.

An international speaker, author and commentator, Joe serves on the board of Option B.  He is the author of “What Do We Tell the Children? Talking to Kids About Death and Dying” and numerous articles.

Joe received his Master of Divinity degree from Yale University, where he concentrated in grief and resilience. He later served as a hospice chaplain at both The Connecticut Hospice and The Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut.

An entrepreneurial leader, Primo designed, built, expanded, and led Good Grief, Inc., the largest children and family bereavement organization in the Northeast, from 2007-2022. As CEO, he supported thousands of grieving children and families after the death of a parent or sibling through free programs at its four campuses and more than 200 school partners. His TED talk, “Grief is Good,” reframed the grief paradigm as a responsive resource. Grateful living became a pillar to his work since his first introduction to Br. Dr. David Steindl-Rast in 2005.

Joe believes: “Grateful living is the stance we take when confronting adversity. It is the deep knowledge that what is before us may not be desired, but we can take control of ourselves despite the chaos around us.”
