Self-Guided Course
Grateful Grief: A Guide for Living with Loss
Explore how the practice of grateful living can sustain and guide you when living with grief and loss.
Grief arrives in many forms and disrupts our daily lives. As prevalent as breath, it is part of every human story, requiring us to reorient to life in ways we had not imagined.
The practice of grateful living can nourish your daily life and empower you to find meaning and purpose in unexpected places. This grateful stance acknowledges heartbreak while strengthening your ability to carry your sorrow alongside your joy.
Yearning for what was and embracing what is, blessing your loss while integrating it into the life that is emerging in its wake — this is grateful grief.
I’m better able to hold grief and gratitude at the same time with no need to let go of one in order to embrace the other.

Joe Primo
Chief Executive Officer
In my work as a hospice chaplain to more than 2,500 patients and then building programs to support thousands of grieving children and families, my understanding of grief was forged by lives that were meeting endings and uncertainty. The enormous amount of death I have encountered in my work taught me that grief is not an adversary, but rather a process of re-emergence to an unimagined life. In a world where grief remains stigmatized, empowered grief is more manageable grief.
Sheryl Chard
Director of Education
I was blessed to spend three decades working with young people and educators. I expected to learn about pedagogy, human development, and leadership. I never imagined how much I would learn about loss and grief. Working in schools, I saw up close the many forms of loss and grief experienced by young people and their families. And I saw the transformative difference it could make to have the accompaniment of community and resources to light a way forward.
